Welcome Message

The Executive Committee for the 5th International Congress on Ionic Liquids (COIL-5) welcomes you to Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal (April 21-25, 2013) to discover and discuss the science and technology of ionic liquids. This is the 5th in a series of very successful congresses on ionic liquids that started in June 2005 in Salzburg, Austria. Later editions were held in Yokohama, Japan (2007), Cairns, Australia (2009) and Washington DC, USA (2011). Each event attracted circa 400 participants, transforming this gathering into the most important congress on this topic, worldwide.

Ionic Liquids − basically liquid salts at experimentally reachable temperatures in any commonly equipped lab − started gaining scientific relevance about 20 years ago. Research tackling and using these fluids continues to boom, involving investigation in many fields of the exact sciences, natural sciences, technology, as well as the life and health sciences. Let us offer a snapshot. More than 5,000 indexed articles were published in 2012 alone, and since 1995 more than 30,000 indexed published works appeared, which, to date, have been cited more than half a million times (close to 600,000 citations).

In contrast to “molecules that have changed the world” – urea, glucose, penicillin, acetylsalicylic acid, or polyethylene, to name just a few, it is highly unlikely that any one unique compound member of this vast family of salts will ever become distinctive. Instead, it is expected that this huge group of new substances will markedly contribute to either the improvement of previously existing processes and materials or the creation of novel ones. In any case, the potential impact on a wide range of fields is immense.

It is worth mentioning that 2013 represents, after 8 years, the return of this congress to Europe. Moreover, with the choice of the next three editions of COIL having already been planned for Korea, 2015, Canada in 2017, and China in 2019, we will not have the chance to meet in Europe again before 2021.

This is, thus, a unique opportunity for European scientists, more specifically Portuguese ones, to present their work to a top, specialized audience, exchanging ideas, concepts, and seeding collaborations with outstanding colleagues and scientists from six continents.

We look forward to seeing you all in Vilamoura - Algarve for a wonderful time.

With our warmest regards,

The Executive Committee on April 21st, 2013, Portugal
