Sir William Wakeham

Professor Sir William Wakeham retired as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton in September 2009. After degrees in Physics at Exeter University he spent a postdoctoral period in USA at Brown University, USA. He took up a lectureship in the Chemical Engineering Department at Imperial College London where he became a professor in 1983. From 1996 to 2001 he was Deputy Rector and Pro-Rector Research and Resources. His academic publications include 9 books and about 400 peer-reviewed  papers in the field of transport processes and thermodynamics.

He has been Chair of the University and Colleges Employers Association, a Member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and a member of the Board of South East of England Development Agency. In 2008 he chaired a Review of Physics in the UK and completed a review of the effectiveness of Full Economic Costing of Research  in 2010. He chaired an Expert group for the European Commission on Philanthropy for Research in Europe.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Senior Vice-President from 2011 and its International Secretary, a President (2011-2012) and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Institute of Physics. He is also currently a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon  and University of Exeter, a  Member of the General Council of Universidade Nova de Lisboa,  as well as Chair of the Exeter Science Park Company, Non-Executive Director of Ilika plc, Chair of the UK South East Physics Network, Trustee of Royal Anniversary Trust, and the Rank Prizes Fund. He was made a Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2009  for services to Chemical Engineering and Higher Education.
